Review: Snatched
Snatched came out this past Friday making it Goldie Hawn’s first movie in over 15 years. It also stars comedienne Amy Schumer and is about a mother and daughter who are kidnapped while travelling in Ecuador. I was interested in this movie since I enjoy Amy Schumer’s comedy and The Heat which was written by the same writer, Katie Dippold.
Now I may have been interested in this movie because of Amy Schumer but Goldie Hawn ended up stealing the show for me. Goldie Hawn was hilarious in her role of an overly cautious and sarcastic mother and I really loved her performance. Wanda Sykes and Joan Cusack also had some funny moments but never really had time to shine. Additionally, pretty much every scene with Christopher Meloni as an American trying to help the ladies was cracking me up.
Ike Barinholtz however, who is known as a comedic actor, made me cringe. I couldn’t stand his character and found him extremely annoying. I would have enjoyed the movie more if his section of the plot was removed entirely. The only joke I remember liking of his was used in the trailer about sending the A-Team. I will say though that his section of the movie had a lot of the theatre laughing so maybe it was just me.
Joan Cusack plays against typecast as a violent ex-special operative who cut out her own tongue.
Unfortunately, humour can only help a movie so much if the plot is weak; which this film suffered from greatly. The real fun of the story starts after they are kidnapped but the beginning seems to drag on before what you know is going to happen actually happens. Then once they are kidnapped, the way the story flows doesn’t always make sense to me.
Also if you are easily offended this film would not be a good choice. In addition to racist stereotypes of the bad guys, the movie pokes fun at the idea of being kidnapped in another country which is actually a legitimate issue facing many travellers. I knew what I was getting into when I went to see this and am able to enjoy this for what it is – just a movie.
General feeling I get when talking about this movie.
Overall, the movie was funny and I enjoyed it, but it was not great.
I give it 2.5 tapeworms out of 5.
